The Special Collections department has been awarded a number of grants in recent years, to enable it to make progress with retrospective conversion of its manual catalogue, to create and develop its manuscripts database, and to digitise its photographic collections.

Previous grants have provided money for structural improvements such as much needed air-conditioning and humidity controls in the Strong Room, the creation of a new Reading Room with space for up to 24 readers, and facilities for viewing microforms and points for laptops.
